Vac-SPME Fiber

Vac-SPME Fiber

The Vac-SPME Fiber closures are designed for use with SPME fibers. The closures offer gastight seal to 20 mm crimp top headspace vials with a long neck over a long period of time and during SPME fiber operations.

Features

  • Easy to use and implement in any routine laboratory.
  • Extraction times are typically halved when sampling under vacuum.
  • The closures are reusable and can be easily handled by an autosampler.
  • The closures are also ideal for sample storage at atmospheric pressure without losing volatile analytes

The Vac-SPME Fiber closures are designed for use with SPME fibers. The closures offer gastight seal to 20 mm crimp top headspace vials with a long neck over a long period of time and during SPME fiber operations.

The metallic body of the closure has magnetic properties to allow easy handling by the autosampler, without using additional magnetic caps.

Each closure has one aperture on the top that can tightly accommodate a plug septum (PN: 00-100) through which air-evacuation and SPME operations take place. The two external grooves on each closure are used to accommodate two types of black Viton O-rings used to seal the vial mouth and neck (PN: 00-001 and 00-002).

We recommend the basic kit (PN: 20-101) that contains 10 Vac-SPME Fiber closures and their O-rings or the full starter kit (PN: 20-102) that additionally includes 10 plug septa.

Features

  • Extraction times are typically halved when sampling under vacuum. The total analysis time is thus reduced, ensuring high sample throughput in analytical laboratories.
  • The use of elevated temperatures is not necessary to achieve high sensitivity. Sample degradation is therefore avoided, and energy consumption is minimized.
  • With vacuum sampling more semi-volatiles can be detected without affecting the extraction of volatiles.
  • Repeatability and sensitivity for semi-volatiles are improved.
  • Easy to use and implement in any routine laboratory.
  • The closures are reusable and can be easily handled by an autosampler. Their magnetic properties exclude the use of additional single-use magnetic caps, reducing thus, laboratory waste and costs.
  • The closures are also ideal for sample storage at atmospheric pressure without losing volatile analytes, for example, during long waiting times on an autosampler tray.

  • The metallic body of the closure is made of stainless-steel with magnetic properties. The metal closure has a good chemical resistance to a wide range of chemicals and is corrosion resistant but must be handled away from strong oxidizers and highly acidic of basic solutions. Prolonged contact with high ionic strength solutions must be avoided.
  • Two types of Viton O-rings are used that show no contamination and have good durability. It is important to note the differing dimensions of the two O-ring types and where used:
  • Top O-Ring (PN: 00-002) is the larger and thicker O-ring that fits on the top part of the closure and forms the seal between the closure and flat top of the vial mouth.
  • Body O-Ring (PN: 00-001) fits on the two grooves of the main body of the closure and seals the closure with the inner neck of the vial.
  • Typical use of Vac closures involves one Top O-Ring and one Body O-Ring on each of the two external grooves of the closure. Each groove can accommodate up to two Body O-rings.
  • The O-rings are resistant to alcohols, aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons among others but are not compatible with ketones, low molecular acids, amines and alkalis, strong oxidizing agents, and strong acids/bases. The recommended max. temperature of operation is + 80oC for water samples.
  • The plug septum (PN: 00-100) is the Thermogreen® LB-2 septum, typically used in GC inlets. It is manufactured from high quality, low bleed material and typically, already conditioned and fully tested for bleed and contamination. The plug septa can be used repeatedly and pierced up to 100 times and still maintain the gas-tight seal.
